Optimal Geomatics Unveils Value-Added LiDAR-Based Solution

Vancouver's Geomatics Inc. reports successfully implementing LiDARgrammetry - a value-added solution that allows LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data to be used in order to generate terrain data models using traditional photogrammetry techniques.

This innovative technology reduces the time taken to develop terrain models and considerably improves their accuracy over methods traditionally employed for the same task, the company describes. Optimal further benefits from the fact that its Photogrammetry-trained workforce can use the process without additional training.

Digital terrain models depict the shape of ground surfaces as a mass of 3-dimensional coordinates. In order for any set of points to be accurate, the distinct and sharp changes in height occurring within the surface must be detailed and described. Until now this task has been undertaken using stereo pairs of aerial photographs (Photogrammetry) and skilled operators that create elevation points using visualization tools.

The implementation of LiDARgrammetry provides Optimal with a competitive advantage over other geomatic companies that require aerial photography to develop terrain models. Optimal is able to work with LiDAR data alone and has eliminated the requirement to collect aerial photographs. Acquisition flights can be undertaken both during day-time and night-time flight operations which allows extended and continuous data collection periods. These capabilities provide a more efficient use of resources, better response times and cost-savings to the customers.

In the "TMSI Global LiDAR Market Report" LiDAR service revenues are expected to increase to US$332 million by 2010. LiDARgrammetry extends across many vertical markets requiring LiDAR data. Optimal has used the process of LiDARgrammetry in transportation, land development, environmental assessment and floodplain mapping applications. Optimal will be showcasing the technology at the upcoming American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) conference in Reno, NV, May 3-5, 2006.

Mark Brooks, Director of Operations, commented: "LiDARgrammetry has allowed Optimal to combine our photogrammetric and LiDAR expertise. Our customers recognize the advantages through reduced acquisition times and a more accurate product. Additionally, the cost-savings gained through the more effective use of personnel and equipment (previously dedicated to photogrammetry only) is also acknowledged by the customer."

TMS International (TMSI) is a full service business planning and marketing company. The company provides a focused range of specialist services all geared towards delivering market insight and growth opportunities for improving business performance through TMSI's individual and "out of the box" approach to solution finding.

Optimal Geomatics specializes in providing highly accurate geomatics services and software to a customer-base which is primarily composed of Electric power line and Gas pipeline utilities. Geomatics is best described as the acquisition, storage, management, retrieval, manipulation, and distribution of spatial or geographically referenced data. Optimal employs a number of specific systems for aerial data acquisition, including its proprietary technology and it also applies innovative technology, techniques, and expertise for in-house processing. The Company's unique mapping products and services help utilities reduce cost, improve efficiency, and better-manage their assets by turning raw data into highly valuable geospatial information and engineering reports. Optimal's customers include many of the major utilities across United States and United Kingdom.
