Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), a full service nuclear technology company providing services to nuclear utilities around the world, has signed a multi-year agreement to integrate Intergraph's SmartPlant Enterprise with AECL's other project delivery application tools.

The integrated engineering environment, including SmartPlant 3D, will be deployed across the company to integrate engineering and analysis, modeling and design, materials management and project implementation, and information management for their Advanced CANDU Reactors (ACR-1000), the companies announced.

The ACR-1000 is an evolutionary, Generation III+, 1200 MWe class pressure tube reactor, designed to meet industry and public expectations for safe, reliable, environmentally friendly and low-cost nuclear generation.

SmartPlant Enterprise and SmartPlant 3D will play a critical role in AECL's ACR-1000 projects, providing AECL with advanced plant design environment based on a data-centric, rule-driven architecture. By integrating key engineering disciplines, the resulting environment offers vast improvements over the constraints imposed by traditional plant design systems. These improvements represent substantial gains and productivity as well as valuable savings in project engineering, manufacturing and construction.

"We looked at many competitive systems, but ultimately chose SmartPlant Enterprise, particularly SmartPlant 3D, because no other enterprise system provided us the productivity gains possible with the Intergraph system," said Stephen Yu, AECL general manager, ACR Product Development. "The integrated, yet modular approach that Intergraph has chosen with SmartPlant Enterprise fits our ACR-1000 product engineering and project delivery strategy and our long-term vision in the nuclear market."

"We have made substantial investments in technology to shorten production schedule, boost productivity and increase the engineering quality of next generation, clean-air, green and safe nuclear reactors," said Gerhard Sallinger, president of Intergraph's Process, Power and Marine division. "AECL's selection of Intergraph's SmartPlant Enterprise suite is once again a validation of our industry and technology leadership as the premier provider of plant engineering and design technology in the rapidly growing nuclear power industry."

Intergraph Corporation is a global provider of spatial information management (SIM) software. Intergraph's customers organize vast amounts of complex data into understandable visual representations, creating intelligent maps, managing assets, building and operating better plants and ships and protecting critical infrastructure and millions of people around the world. Atomic Energy of Canada Limited is a fully integrated nuclear technology and service company providing services to nuclear utilities around the world. Established in 1952, AECL is the designer and builder of CANDU technology including the CANDU 6, one of the world's top-performing reactors.
